Core Competency Testing

In this part of your training, you’ll learn about the skills you need to show you can do safely and correctly—this is called competency testing.

State rules say that Homemakers and Personal Care Workers (PCWs) are allowed to do different types of tasks. Your job description explains which ones you are expected to do.

Your employer will observe you doing each task and check that you do it the right way. This test is based on the tasks that:

• You are allowed to do by law

• Your agency offers as part of care

• Are included in your assignment

The person watching you will take notes and mark off each step of the task. Don’t worry—this is not about being perfect. It’s about making sure you’re ready to give safe and helpful care.

Think of it as a practice run to show what you’ve learned!
